THE NEED FOR COMPLEX PSYCHOLOGICAL COUNSELING WITHIN PROFESSIONAL SPORT DOMAIN - DIFFERENT THEORIES PRESENTATION AND THEORETICAL DISCUSSION

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

There is a need for understanding athletes values, meanings and believes as well as need to apply them within sport psychology practice. Those issues have an impact on their achievements as well as on the self-development of an athlete. The theories will be discussed from the two broad perspectives namely Socratic and Sophistic, where the author will mostly concentrate on Socratic theories, represented by such authors as Nest, Ravizza, Rogers, Maslow, Adler or Obuchowski. Those theories will concern the applied sport psychology practice. The aim of presentation of these theories is to propose the best answer to the question on how to help athletes self-develop, become more congruent and achieve greater success both in sport and life.complex support within sport psychology practice will allow practitioners to be more individualized and adjustable to the athlete’s needs. Also the theoretical analysis of the psychological humanistic and existential theories could give the implications for the schooling system of future sport psychologists. The significance of complex psychological counseling has been proved including mental training techniques and Socratic issues. Also the need for revision of the sport psychology practitioners’ professional philosophy has been aroused. Author’s work experiences have proven that complex psychological counseling is accepted by the athletes and searched for. This level of support can only be provided when psychologists working with athletes are people of complex psychological knowledge, understood here as both Sophistic (mental training) and Socratic.
