THE NEW SOCIAL IDENTITY AND ITS SYMBOLS IN THE DISCOURSE OF SINGLE PARTY ADMINISTRATORS

Journal Title: The Journal of International Social Research - Year 2014, Vol 7, Issue 34

Abstract

The single party period, in which the modern society was largely constructed, was an era of major transformation. This period must be consdered as the baseline for Turkey, as the political and cultural values that took root in this period were sustained in later times. With the proclamation of the Republic, the government assumed an intervention based and deterministic approach to social issues, diverging from the policies of previous governments. While transforming society, the government also attempted to formulate symbols of identity for the society. The government became the single determinant of societal transformation, forming a common cultural identity and identifying the ideals of the Republican society. From this point onwards, society was not only subject to surveilance, but also to deep rooted transformation. In this paper, the discourse of administrators of the single party regarding the new social identity and the symbols used in expressing this identity will be examined.
