The occurrence of fungi allergens in the air of athletic tunnel

Journal Title: Mikologia Lekarska - Year 2006, Vol 13, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: Anamorphic fungi play a considerable part in the arising of allergy. The greatest importance in allergy have fungal spores belonging to the following genera: Alternaria, Cladosporium. Aim: The aim of the research was to estimate the concentration of fungi allergens in the airof an athletic tunnel where students of the Academy of Physical Education train. It is a tunnel-shaped gym. Material and methods: The research was conducted in November and December 2005. It was done regularly before training sessions at the beginning of every weekand afterthe sessions at the end of a week. The air samples were collected using a sedimentary method, taking tempera-tures and relative humidity at the same time. Isolated fungi were incubated in 27°C, assigningthem to a particular group afterwards. Results: On average 216.6 cfu/m3 of fungi spores were grown before training sessions and 286.7 cfu/m3 afterthe sessions. Afterthe training sessions fungi of Aspergillus (38.9%): A. niger, A. fumigatus, Penicillium (25.0%): P. chrysogenum, P. viridicatum, P. lanosum, and Rhodotorula (16.6%) dominated in the air samples. Conclusions: There is a high concentration of fungi allergens in the air. It may cause allergy to people who are sensitive or exposed to enhanced lung ventilation.
