The origin and semantic content of the term «ergonym»

Abstract
The article is devoted to the peculiarities of the origin and semantic content of the term «ergonym». In order to eliminate terminological ambivalence, a distinction has been made between the term «ergonym» and many others that partially or completely duplicate its meaning. The article also clearly outlined the basic terms of the study. Thus, ergonym is seen as a proper name that means association of people with a specific goal; ergonymics is a section of onomastics that studies proper names of people’s associations; ergonymic means related to ergonyms; ergonymikon is repertoire of proper names for designating associations of people of a certain ethnic group or period. The purpose of this article is to analyse the evolution of the term «ergonym», to eliminate terminological discrepancies relating to the examined category of proper names, and to suggest clarification in the creation and functioning of ergonymic terminology. The object of the study are proper names denoting groups of people. The subject of the study are the semantics and origin of the term «ergonym». The study material consists of 3,000 ergonyms (every 1,000 of them taken from the Ukrainian, English and Russian languages) that were selected from informational and advertising materials of printed and electronic media. The practical value of the work consists in clarifying and proposing the terminological apparatus of ergonymic research.
