The Peculiarities of Media Library Application as a Means of Teaching Students of Non-Linguistic Universities a Foreign Language

Abstract

In the article the authors analyze the terms "electronic media library", "monological speech", "monological speech skills", "blended learning". Electronic media library is defined as a manager for manipulating media data, i.e. a special way of storing media files (pictures, presentations, audio- and video files) that enables to keep them in order and to use them easily and conveniently. The term "monological speech" is understood as an organized kind of oral speech that is immediately addressed to an interlocutor or some audience and presupposes a speech of one person. The classification of speech skills is suggested, the order of teaching monological speech by means of electronic media library is substantiated, the stages of using audio- and video materials as means of teaching monological speech are defined. The authors analyze existing modes of blended learning to select the one that is the most compatible with using electronic library. Among them there are: Individual Rotation Model (that presupposes independent learning of material and its individual discussion with a teacher, and also tutorials organization); Flex Model of teaching students (that means mainly online education guided by a teacher, classroom meetings are organized periodically to discuss questions that arise); Self-Blend Model (that obliges students not only to study the core course, but they also have to learn information from Internet-programs, resources, free courses – they have to complete the course content); Enriched Virtual Model (using which teachers work using online platform that supplies all the materials and activities necessary for students). The latter model was chosen as the most appropriate for using media library.
