Abstract

The memorats, which have been considered under a separate category than the legends in folklore studies since the beginning of this century, constitute significant place in the narrative diversity of Turkish oral culture. The unique characteristics and composition of the memorats identify them as independent narratives. Memorats, which usually subject the challenge and struggle between the humans and supernatural beings, have been formulated around the core of uncanny spaces. The studies subjecting the memorats in Turkey have focused on the characteristics and the origins of the supernatural beings that generally are the main characters of the memorats and the spaces where brings the subjects and the objects together have not been analyzed in a problem-based perspective. This study discusses the human-environment interaction on the basis of uncanny space perception and the origins and sources of this perception in the memorats of Eastern Black Sea region. The characteristics of a space and the human experience and beliefs, which affect this perception and give it a collective character are examined in taking the various elements of the memorats into account in the framework of space and narrative relationship
