THE PLACE AND ROLE OF THE LOCAL LORE WORK OF THE STUDENTS OF GREEK CATHOLIC THEOLOGICAL ACADEMY IN LVIV IN ITS EDUCATIONAL PROCESS (THE 1930-S)

Abstract
The article deals with the activity of Greek Catholic Theological Academy in Lviv in the context of clerical education of Galicia. The reasons caused the Metropolitan of Ukrainian Greek Catholic church A. Sheptytskyi to organize this edu- cational institution have been analyzed. The emphasis is made on the peculiarities of the educational process, in particu- lar the importance of the practical training not only theoretical lessons. They usually were called scientific seminars in everyday use. It was indicated, that Y. Slipyi as a rector and teacher of the academy directed future Greek Catholic clergy to increase their scientific level. Based on the documentary material, the author tries to investigate one of the segments of extra-curricular work, such as reasons, peculiarities, directions and achievements of the local lore studies. It was found out, that studies of history of the native land were carried out by the students-theologians during the ethnographic and archaeological expeditions. Their organizers and scientific mentors were professors I. Krypiakevych, K. Chekhovych, Ya. Pasternak, M. Drahan. Led by the experienced faculty teaching staff, young scientists showed interest in the studies of the past and own people’s traditions, their cultural heritage. In addition, students gained experience how to analyze and describe found rarities. They studied how to conduct scientific-inventory examination and restore damaged artworks or if it was necessary, to preserve them. From this point of view, young people had to realise the importance of preservation of memorials of spiritual and material culture for future generations. That’s why, one of the Y. Slipyi’s innovations was introduction of archeology course as a compulsory academic discipline. Ya. Pasternak as a teacher of this subject always engaged his students in the archaeological excavations. The expeditions usually took place on the territory of Galicia. The participation of students in the research of St. George Cathedral caves in Lviv, remains of temple-rotunda in Poberezhzhia village in Prykarpattya and ancient burial grounds on the territory of Lviv region was analyzed. In the future all the items found enlarged the museum collection, visualized and enriched educational process. It was proved that local lore studies promoted development of Ukrainian theological education and became one of the significant factors of the formation of new kind of young clergy in the academy who were true pastors of their people able to con- tribute into the national identity rise.
