ARTISTIC WORLD OF THE STORY «SHADOWS OF FORGOTTEN ANCESTORS» BY MYKHAILO KOTSUBYNSKY IN THE CONTEXT OF THE PSYCHO-HISTORICAL CONCEPT OF LLOYD DE MAUSE

Abstract
The article is devoted to the problems of the artistic world of the story of Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky «Shadows of For- gotten Ancestors». Based on the concept of the historical development of parenting styles and the relationship between parents and children, proposed by historian and psychologist Lloyd de Mause, the historical positioning of the artistic world of this famous work of Ukrainian literature is examined in the publication. The projective and inverse reactions are clearly expressed in is attitude mother of the main hero of the story to her child. This is evidenced, first of all, by the motive for replacing the child, described by M. Kotsiubynsky at the very begin- ning of the work, and the fury of his mother to the little Ivan. Projective and inverse reactions in the context of the psy- cho-historical concept of de Mause are characteristic of an abandoning model of the upbringing style. The abandoning model of the relationship between parents and children have not yet foreseen the perception of parental responsibilities as desirable, morally positive and necessary. However, widespread infanticide in an abandoning model has sometimes been replaced, among other things, by the practice of transferring children to education to strange persons. Therefore, in favour of an abandoning model of the relationship as a lack of desire to bring up children, the childlessness of Ivan and Palahna, as well as the warnings about Marichka’s pregnancy, can be symbolically interpreted. According to the scheme of historical changes in the styles of L.de Mause ‘s education, the distribution of the aban- doning model comes to the IV–XIII centuries. So, there are reasons to believe that the artistic world of the story repro- duces the mentality and the picture of the world characteristic of these centuries. In favour of such a historical perspective of the artistic world, the story «Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors» can be interpreted as a specific combination of pagan and Christian motives in it. Despite the apparent Christian positioning of the heroes in their consciousness and mental picture, folk and pagan images are still prevailing. Obviously, such an advantage of the local figurative tradition over Christianity was characteristic of the very first centuries of Christianiza- tion. The definition of mentality, the outlook of the heroes and the peculiarities of the artistic world of the whole story as such that can be attributed to the IV–XIII centuries does not mean that it is precisely in this historical period that, accord- ing to the author’s design, events in the work are taking place. Lloyd de Mause draws attention to the significant historical inertia of the upbringing styles. Especially since the isolation of the mountain world, depicted by M. Kotsiubynsky in the story "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", and as a result, the slowing down of the historical movement in it, could contrib- ute to the preservation of the ancient mentality and in later times.
