Abstract
The present article deals with some aspects of literary translation of nonce words in «Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows» by J. K. Rowling, analyzing the Ukrainian translation of the mentioned work. The paper explores the meaning of «nonce word», considering different approaches of linguists, both native and foreign, to the discussed term. As a result, the paper makes possible to define the term of “nonce word” as a spontaneous coinage, usually strongly context-bound new formation, that designates new or until now unknown objects or states, and expresses the specific attitude of a speaker towards the referent. In order to discuss possible ways of nonce word coining, the study examines word-formation means of the English language: compounding, derivation, conversion, blending, analogy, reduplication etc. The paper points out, that nonce words can be coined by all word-formation means, both conventional and unconventional i. e. compounding or combination of non-combinable morphemes and phonetic gibberish. Main translating approaches to conveying and preserv- ing nonce word peculiarities are also described, among which are transliteration, transcription, calque or loan translation, equivalence, descriptive translation and own nonce word coinage. It is emphasized that the way of translation of a nonce word depends on the context, the word-formation type and its purpose of usage. Another issue that the translator should be aware of is the language peculiarities – depending on its nature (synthetic or analytic one) the translating approaches can vary. Correct choice and adequate implementation of approaches defines the quality of translation. It is found out that the most frequent translating approach is loan translation (calque), which is used to convey nonce words mostly coined through compounding, sometimes through derivation and analogy. Nonce words based on Latin and/or Greek roots are transmitted through transcription and transliteration. In cases of vivid connotation, coinage of translator’s own nonce word can be observed. Speaking of such translating techniques as descriptive translation and equivalence, they are mostly observed in situations of lack of adequate translator’s language means or total absence of such a phenomenon. The perspective of cur- rent study may lay in lexico-semantic and stylistic analysis of J. K. Rowling’s nonce word formation style.
