CHRISTIAN POLISH-UKRAINE UNION IN DROHOBYCH (1930’S): DOCUMENT TO THE HISTORY OF THE SOCIETY

Abstract
The document on the activities of a public organization Christian Polish-Ukrainian Union in Drohobych (1932 – 1939) is analyzed in this article. The document is in the State Archives of the Lviv region. This is the official announcement of Emil Verstein, Drohobych county governor (starosta), addressed to the political and social department of the Lviv Provincial Government in August 1937. The document an introduced for scientific research, printed in the original language (in Polish). The authors conditionally divided the document into several parts: a brief history and purpose of the society; analysis of Antony Stankevich’s motives as the founder of the organization; quantitative, national and social structure of the society; the Drohobych county governor (starosta) offers about the further use of a public organization in the political interests of the Polish government. In addition, four photo about the activities of Christian Polish-Ukrainian Union are in this article. These photo are posted on the National Digital Archive website (Poland). The first photograph depicts the building of the society, on the other – members of the society during various public actions in 1933 and 1937. Conclusions about the representativeness of the historical source for studying the history of social life in the Drohobych-city, to characterize the national policy of the Polish authorities in Eastern Galicia and the attitude of the Polish government to the Ukrainian question, the authors makes in this article. The main idea of the authors is that Christian Polish-Ukrainian Union in Drohobych was founded on the initiative of a liberal man who lived in the multi-ethnic environment of the Drohobych-city and wanted a peaceful, civilized co-existence between the Ukrainian and Polish peoples in the Polish republic. The society was founded in a difficult time, when relations between Ukrainians and Poles became very aggravated. Polish officials decided to use this organization to implement the state (and national) assimilation of Ukrainians in the late 1930s.
