THE PLACE OF THE LOCALIZATION COURSE IN TRANSLATION AND INTERPRETING AND DEPARTMENT OF TRANSLATION STUDIES’ CURRICULUM

Abstract

In this study, it is aimed to determine what is localization concept that is one of the most important and the newest concepts in Translation Studies today and in addition to this, to determine the weight of the localization lessons in the universities’ general curriculum providing translation education at the undergraduate level in Turkey and to make comments on whether this weight is sufficient or not. The research process took place as follows: The document search was carried out to determine what localization concept is, the importance and places of use. Then, OSYM data booklets were examined in order to determine the universities providing translation education at undergraduate level in Turkey. As a result of this examination and scanning, the concept of localization has been determined and also areas of its usage have been determined. As a result of examining the data booklets, it has been determined that 15 state universities actively engaged in translation education at undergraduate level in Turkey have 28 departments in various languages and 14 foundation universities have 20 departments in various languages . However, it has been determined that there are 9 universities in these universities that provide localization courses. It is determined that 5 of these 9 universities are state universities and 4 of them are foundation universities. These universities are; Bogazici University, Hacettepe University, Ege University, Kırıkkale University, Yaşar University, Sakarya University, Arel University, Izmir Economy University and Atılım University. The curricula of the identified universities were examined and the localization courses in the curriculum examined were identified. Later, the weight of these courses in general translation education was determined. This obtained data was expressed through slice graphs. In this process, qualitative research method was used because the documents were examined. Then, in the area of localization, which is very important today, it has been discussed whether these lesson hours are sufficient for the students to become competent on localization or not.
