The Preventive Effect of Vitamin C upon Added Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether (MTBE) in Drinking Water on the Liver of Albino Mice

Abstract

Added methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) to gasoline as oxygenates for complete combustion. Human are exposed to (MTBE) through inhaling polluted air, also by drinking or swimming in polluted water. This study was conducted to see the histological and ultra-structural effect of the (MTBE) on the hepatocyte with preventive role of vitamin C. Forty male and female mice were divided to a control group given water and a treated group subdivided to two groups, 1/20 of MTBE and vitamin C with 1/20 of MTBE for six weeks Mice were weighted before and weekly during treatment, mice were dissected, liver weighted, cut and placed in special histological and ultra-structural fixative solutions. The rate of weight increase was observed in male and female mice treated with MTBE and with vitamin C and MTBE gradual increase in the rate of decrease in weight for males, and mild increase rate of weight for females. Show histological study of all transections, increase or decrease in cell size for males, granular cytoplasm, picnosis or lysis of the nucleus, dilatation of sinusoids. In females, decrease or lysis of cytoplasm which accompanied with generated vacuoles, and the presence of balloon cells. The ultra-structural studies for males and females showed increase of rough and smooth endoplasmic reticulum, increase the number and form of mitochondria and the presence of myelinoid membranes and myelin figures. The obtained data indicated that MTBE is considered sub-lethal substance with moderate effect on the cells and vitamin C can act as stimulus for the formation of free radicals which cause damage on the cells
