THE PROBLEM “FRANKO – HRUSHEVSKY” IN THE HISTOROGRAPHIC DISCOURSE

Abstract
The article is devoted to the historiographical analysis of the problem “Franko and Hrushevsky”. Different approaches to the study of this problem have been revealed, the main periods of its research have been analyzed. The sources of the study of the relations between the two scholars have been indicated, their scientific collaboration has been briefly outlined in the framework of the SSS from the time of the arrival of M. Hrushevsky to Lviv in 1894 and until the death of Kamenyar in 1916. The attention has been drawn to the complex evolution of their relationship from friendship to conflict, which was conditioned by progressive illness and a sharp deterioration of I. Franko’s physical and mental health and the complex, authoritarian nature of M. Hrushevsky. The article traces the historiographic research of the problem of relationship between I. Franko and M. Hrushevsky in chronological order. It has been noted that in the Soviet Franko studies from the end of the 20th and early 30’s there was formed the thesis of the antagonistic ideological positions of two scientists. Ivan Franko was purposefully displayed as a writer of a revolutionary-democratic stream, on the contrary, M. Hrushevsky was proclaimed to be the main figure of “bourgeois nationalists”. After the death of the historian in 1934, this tendency was further aggravated and received its logical continuation in the postwar period. The study considers the legacy of I. Franko and M. Hrushevsky from the standpoint of a national paradigm by diasporian scientific centers. A Considerable attention has been paid to the relations between these two figures, which was conditioned by the need to respond to the total falsification of their relations in the work of Soviet authors, and the appearance of the memoirs of Ivan Franko’s daughter, Anna Franko-Klyachko, published in Toronto in 1956, in which these relationships were presented as highly conflictual and antagonistic. Among diasporian studies, special attention was paid to the works of V. Doroshenko, L. Vinar, O. Dombrovsky, in which, using a solid source basis, the factual mistakenness of most of the adherents of the conflict interpretation of I. Frankо’s and M. Hrushevsky’s relations was refuted. It has been emphasized that the new, modern stage of the national historiography of the problem of these relations was affected by the radical revision of the main theses of the Soviet Franco Studies in general and, in particular, by the revision of the established stereotypical, negative evaluations of I. Franko by his well-known contemporaries M. Drahomanov, L. Ukrainka, M. Hrushevsky. The article concludes that there is a need for a comprehensive study of the relations between two prominent scientists from the point of view of modern methodological points, taking into account the expanded source base and the existing historiographical tradition.
