THE PROBLEM OF THE FORMATION OF THE ENGLISH LEXICAL COMPETENCE OF STUDENTS IN THE TEACHING OF «HOME READING» IS INVESTIGATED IN THE ARTICLE.

Abstract
Based on the analysis of scientific sources (A. Bogush, A. Bihych, R. Martynova, S. Nikolaeva) we have suggests that the concept of «the English lexical competence» is understood as a system of lexical knowledge and ability to use еру lexical units, depending of the socio&cultural context.The components of English lexical competence is cognitive (knowledge of English lexical units, individual vocabulary) and activity (use of lexical items in the speech according to the requirements of correctness, consistency, accuracy, clarity, expressiveness). The system of exercises in accordance with the stages of organization of the work pre&textual, textual, post&textual) is characterized. In pre&textual stage the teacher explained the difficulties of translation, grammatical forms and syntactic structures that can raise questions, reveal the importance of lexical units. In textual stage students read and translated the novel of J. Galsworthy «The First and The Last». Our experience shows that at the post&textual stage it is possible to provide intensive mastery of lexical units and to use them in speech activity. For example: describe the Keith Darrant’s moral portrait, his capacity for critical thinking and qualities such as endurance, self&control, perseverance, determination. Compare the nature of two brothers – Laurence and Keith; prove that Laurence is associated with values&such as goodness, mercy, love, tolerance, and Keith – with selfishness, cruelty. The prospects of the study of this problem provide the elaboration of receptive exercises with «Home Reading» for students of the initial phase of training.
