The Problem of the Probative of al-Khabar al-Wahid According to Shia Imamiyya: a Case Study in Sheikh al-Taifa al-Tusi

Abstract
The hujjiyya (probative) problem of isolated Hadiths/al-khabar al-wahid/al-ahad is one of the controversial issues in Shia Imamiyya as well as in the ahl al-Sunna. Shi’i Imami scholars who lived in the mutaqaddimun period usually argue that isolated hadiths don’t express ilm, so they can not be accepted as a hujja; but primarily Sheikh al-Taifa al-Tusi and other some Usuli scholars, who are adherents of mutaakhkhirun period, argue that al-khabar al-wahid can be accepted as a hujja, provided that it includes some qualifications. This article, therefore, aims to examine and discuss the main reasons and basis of different opinions of Tusi and of his teachers Sheikh Mufid and Sharif al-Murtaza about al-khabar al-wahid and the historical evolution of al-Tusi’s opinion.
