The Problem of Turkish History Thesis in Academic Literature

Journal Title: İzmir Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2019, Vol 1, Issue 1

Abstract

The Turkish history thesis represents a major transformation in the early Republican history studies. New history studies, which started with the directive of Atatürk in 1928, reached a conclusion in 1932 and the Turkish history thesis emerged. In fact, even during this period, the thesis, which caused some differences in academic circles, is now subject to greater criticism and is being understood with different evaluations. This controversial position of the Turkish history thesis stems from the imposition of political meanings on the part of its history discipline. The common attitude developed by academic circles is that the thesis is produced to meet a need arising from internal and external political concerns. However, different attitudes are observed about the content, function, quality, contributions or damages of the thesis. Although this seems natural, such approaches, which are as sharp as black and white, pose a serious problem about how the Turkish history thesis should be positioned in the historical process. As a field in which objectivity is minimized, the Turkish history thesis needs to be understood rather than judgment. Therefore, this study aims to try to understand the thesis by bringing together different approaches in Turkish academic history. As a result of the research, it was seen that the problematic areas where academics and writers were separated focused on the reasons of the emergence of the thesis, its political-ideological character and the scientificness of the thesis.
