The Problems Experienced by Syrian Students and Suggestions for Solutions

Abstract

In the research, the problems of Syrian students have and possible solutions to these problems according to the administrators, teachers, students, and their parents from the Z Primary School in Y town of X province in the Aegean region. Factual situation study, which is one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the project. The study group of the research was chosen according to the sampling method which is easy to access. The study group at school was chosen by using criteria and maximum diversity method. One administrator, six teachers, seven students and five parents are the study group of the project. A semi-structured interview form was used in the data gathering tool. The data were analyzed using descriptive and content analysis. The ideas of the administrators and teachers about the orientation of Syrian students are considered under the introduction and Turkish teaching sub-themes and the need for in-service education of teachers is considered under the sub-theme of knowing their culture and learning their language. According to the participants of the project, the problems Syrian students are having are examined under the sub-themes of physical, security, social, physiological, education and family problems. According to the parents and students, the Syrian families performing their responsibilities towards their children are examined under the sub-themes of physical, emotional, educational and needs for raising a child. The possible solutions for the problems emerged from the sub-themes are as follows; supplying school materials and clothing, having a security seminar and supplying schools with security staff, activities such as sport tournaments, breakfast organizations, reading activities and etc., giving students responsibilities, having students share their problems with guidance counselor frequently, approaching the students with kindness and tolerance, informing other students, courses for teaching Turkish, activities for understanding the language, determining new educational policies, giving scholarship to the Syrian students, meeting with their parents, having meetings between school and the parents, educating the families, visiting the families, gathering supply form the local benefactors and generating job opportunities for the Syrian refugees.
