The Problems that Students Participating in Erasmus Programme Encountered and Their Solutions: A Phenomenological Study

Abstract

In this study, the problems experienced by the students who have passed a certain period of undergraduate study abroad within Erasmus Exchange Program and the solutions for these problems have been examined. This qualitative study designed as phenomenological research included 13 students who are currently studying in various academic departments of Karabuk University and have already studied for a specific amount of time in a foreign university through Erasmus programme. The participants of the present study were chosen through criterion sampling, maximum variation sampling and convenience sampling together. The data of the study were gathered through a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers and content and descriptive analysis techniques were performed to analyse the data of the study. Results revealed that for the majority of the participants Erasmus programme was as an unmissable opportunity, sheltering and culture were the most prominent problems during the programme, the support of friends was important to solve the problems, providing more funds and participants’ high level of foreign language proficiency were two critical things to make the Erasmus programme more effective, Erasmus programme contributed most to the vision of participants along with their language and personal skills. Findings of the study were discussed in line with the related literature and some suggestions were made.
