THE PROPERTIES OF a-C LOW FRICTION COATINGS DEPOSITED BY PLD METHOD
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2009, Vol 223, Issue 1
Abstract
In the study the results of the investigations of the properties of a-C coatings deposited by the PLD method are presented. The effect of a gaseous atmosphere of the PLD deposition process on phase composition, structure, surface morphology and the coefficient of friction were investigated. Obtained results indicate that the PLD process atmosphere is an important factor influencing the a-C coating tribological behaviour. The coefficient of friction was lower for a-C coating deposited in an acetylene atmosphere than for a-C coating deposited in an argon atmosphere. It was shown that a low friction coefficient of a-C coatings deposited by the PLD method resulted from the presence of a graphite phase in their structure. Good friction properties of the a-C coatings indicate numerous potential applications as a low friction film used for deposition on small machine components.
