Journal Title: Ankara Üniversitesi Sosyal Bilimler Dergisi - Year 2012, Vol 3, Issue 1
Abstract
The aim is to evaluate the relations between mental health and perceived social supports of family caregivers (n=154), and to compare family caregivers (n=59) with noncaregivers (n=59) with respect to mental health. The data were gathered using the demographic questionnaire and the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and the Multiple Perceived Social Support Scale. It was found that there were some differences between two participant groups with respect to mental health and perceived social support, and there were significant relations between mental health and social support of the family caregivers. There are some similarities between those findings and western literature; for example, most caregivers are women, there is more risk on caregivers’ mental health, social support is important for caregivers’ mental health.
