Abstract

One of the leading topics of contemporary Ukrainian historiographical science is the study of the bilateral relations between Ukraine and European countries during the period of national liberation competitions, among which the relations with Germany and Austria-Hungary on the basis of the conditions of the Brest agreement deserve special attention, the signing of which gave our state the opportunity to acquire all rights and obligations of the subject of the international law. Relations between Ukraine, Germany and Austria-Hungary were carried out through bilateral diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level. From June 1918, the German and Austro-Hungarian embassies began to operate in Ukraine. In addition, the consular network of these countries on the territory of Ukraine was also presented. Comparing Ukraine's bilateral relations with Germany and its relations with Austria-Hungary, it should be noted that cooperation with the former was much more active. Ukraine has achieved some success in using the power and influence of Germany to solve important problems of state building: international recognition, ensuring independence, protection, and fair harmonization of borders, taking into account the unity of ethnic Ukrainian lands. With the advent of the Directory, bilateral German-Ukrainian contacts are almost stopped. And only in the beginning of 1919 they are goining a new turn, but not as powerful as ever.
