The Relationship between Personality Traits, Psychological Capital and Mental Health

Abstract
Background and purpose: Undoubtedly, mental health plays crucial role in the dynamics and efficiency of individuals in society. Many studies show that the more mental health we have, the less susceptible we are. One of the issues that can affect people's mental health is the issue of psychological capital. What is clear is that the concept of psychological capital can represent individuals' internalized and behavioral tendencies and also, permanent characteristics, such as personality and personality traits, and how human beings are aroused in adverse conditions which are discussed in psychology. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between personality traits, psychological capital and mental health among students of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Methods: In this study, correlation method was used for analysis. The statistical sample of the study, determined by using Cochran method, included 380 undergraduate and postgraduate students who were selected through simple random sampling. The measurement instruments included: MC Crea and Costa's Personality Questionnaire (1990), Goldberg/Hiller's Mental Health Questionnaire (1979) and Luthans's Psychological Capital Questionnaire (2007). Results: The results showed that there is a significant relationship between psychological capital and mental health. Also, it was revealed that dimensions of psychological capital can predict mental health. Among the dimensions of psychological capital, agreeableness is the strongest predictor of mental health. Moreover, there is a significant relationship between personality dimensions and mental health. Personality dimensions can significantly predict mental health. Conclusion: Among the personality dimensions, self-efficacy was the strongest predictor of mental health.
