THE RELATIONSHIP OF SELECT PSYCHOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOMOTORIC VARIABLES TO SKILL LEVEL

Journal Title: Medycyna Sportowa - Year 2007, Vol 23, Issue 5

Abstract

Background. The purpose of this study was to examine to what extent athletes of different skill levels differ from each other in such psychological and psychomotor variables as: simple reaction time, recognition reaction time in a surprising situation, the locus of control, the level of anxiety, the level of satisfaction with previous achievements, the level of belief in the future success. Additional purpose of the research was to examine the influence of the gender of the results and relations between the examined variables.Material and methods. 40 taekwondo athletes ITF participated in the study. The sample consisted of athletes of different gender and with different skill level. They were asked to complete Cattell’s IPAT Anxiety Scale Self-Analysis Form, Rotter’s Locus of Control Scale and a test was performed using a special device to measure reaction time – MRK-432. Additionally, they were asked two closed-ended questions. They had to access to what extent they are satisfied with their previous achievements and believe in their future success.Results. Mean recognition reaction time and reaction time in a surprising situation in the group of the best athletes is shorter compared to the group of the worst athletes. Athletes performing at the highest level had also a stronger internal locus of control. Analysis of significant differences between mean scores in the group of women and men revealed that these groups differ significantly only in one factor. Mean simple reaction time in the group of women is longer than in the group of men. Analysis of the relationships between separated psychological variables revealed the relationship between the locus of control and the belief in future success. The weaker the athletes’ external locus of control, the higher the level of their belief.Conclusions. The research indicates that:1. variables of recognition reaction time, reaction time in a surprising situation and the locus of control have a significant influence on sports achievements, because they allow to distinguish between the groups of the best and the worst athletes,2. mean simple reaction time in the group of women is significantly longer compared to that in the group of men,3. there are significant correlations between the examined variables.
