The results of corrective osteotomy of malunited distal radius fractures

Abstract
Background. We report the outcome of osteotomy for malunion of distal radius fractures.Material and Methods. We evaluated 12 patients with distal radius malunion, at an average age of 54, who were treated with a corrective osteotomy. Wrist motion, grip strength, along with pre- and post-osteotomy radiographs were examined. The indications for correction were a degree of deformity, limitation of function, pain and appearance of the wrist.Results. The radiographic evaluation proved that the restoration of normal anatomic relations between the distal radius and the ulna leads to significant improvement of the function of the hand measured by range of motion and grip strength.Conclusion. Corrective osteotomy of the distal radius for malunion is associated with favorable outcomes.
