THE ROLE OF ETHOXYLATES OF OLEYL ALCOHOL IN CONTROLLING OF ANTISEIZURE PROPERTIES OF WATER-BASED LUBRICANTS
Journal Title: Tribologia - Year 2011, Vol 235, Issue 1
Abstract
The influence of the composition of surfactants aqueous solutions (ethoxylates of oleyl alcohol) on their antiseizure properties is presented in the paper. Compositions of micellar aqueous solutions of ethoxylates of oleyl alcohol at ethoxylation degree 2, 10 and 20 were tested. The content of surfactant and the hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) was exactly the same for all the solutions. Two solutions were prepared: 1% aqueous solution of oleyl alcohol ethoxylate at ethoxylation degree 10 (denoted 1% AO-10) and 1% aqueous solution containing the mixture of ethoxylates of oleyl alcohol at ethoxylation degrees 2 and 20 in the proportion of 3:7 (denoted 1% AO-M1). The HLB value of the compounds applied in both solutions was the same, equal to 12. In order to verify the antiseizure properties of the lubricants the tests on T-02 tribometer (a four-ball machine) were performed. The moment of the friction force versus the linearly increasing load (from 0 to 7.2 kN) was analysed. On the basis of the relationships obtained the following parameters were evaluated: scuffing load (Pt), seizure load (Poz) and limiting pressure of seizure (poz). It was observed that application of the lubricant based on the mixture of two compounds (1% AO-M1) resulted in an increase of Pt and poz by approximately 30%, as compared to the lubricant based on one compound. No significant changes of Poz were recorded. It is supposed that the differences of the parameters assessed are caused by various packing of the additive molecules in the tribofilms formed. This directly affects the durability of the film and, furthermore, the break resistance of the lubricant layer.
