The Role of Fluorodeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography Imaging in Mesothelioma

Journal Title: Nükleer Tıp Seminerleri - Year 2018, Vol 4, Issue 1

Abstract

Mesothelioma is a highly aggressive neoplasm originating from mesothelial cells in serosal surfaces and mostly (90%) from pleura. Exposure to asbestos and erionite fibers plays an important role in pleural mesothelioma etiology. Despite multimodality treatment regimens, the prognosis is unfavorable. Radiological findings are not enough for diagnosing pleural mesothelioma in many cases. Fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) is an important noninvasive imaging modality for diagnosis of malign pleural pathologies. PET/CT is not only valuable for diagnosis, but it also plays a role in the staging, evaluation of treatment response, and prediction of prognosis. In addition, SUV value of primary tumor is an independent predictor for survival. Volume-based quantitative parameters like metabolik tumor volume and total lesion glycolysis have a prognostic role and are also useful for evaluation of treatment response.
