The role of non-invasive diagnostics in assessment of hepatic fibrosis progression
Journal Title: Gastroenterologia Polska - Year 2007, Vol 14, Issue 5
Abstract
Conventional biochemical and serological assays have limited value in hepatic fibrosis assessment and histopathological examination of a liver biopsy specimen is still the gold standard in liver disease staging. However, liver biopsy in spite of its incontestable great diagnostic worth has many limitations and can be a source of variouserrors resultingfrom too smali tissue specimen, takingsample liver fragment from not changed by disease process or from errors in histopathological observation. Expanding knowledge about liverfibrosis leads to using in therapy the new drugs causing slackening, stopping and even reversion of this process. Therefore, clinical trials focused on finding new non-invasive diagnostic tools giving possibilities of frequent, more accurate and reproducible assessment of hepatic fibrosis are constantly conducted. These diagnostic tools are indispensable in accurate disease progression monitoring as well as prognosis and response to treatment assessment. The aim of our paper is to present current knowledge on the available non-invasive diagnostic methods being used in assessment of hepatic fibrosis.
