The role of nurses in the care of ophthalmologic patients – an example of problems in patients with glaucoma, before and after trabeculectomy

Abstract

Introduction: One of the main causes of blindness is glaucoma, a disease that each year deprives millions of people of their sight. Currently, the world is inhabited by over 7 million people who, because of glaucoma, irretrievably lose their sight. As is apparent from the WHO study, only every second patient with glaucoma is aware of the disease. Due to the fact that glaucoma is a huge problem worldwide and in Poland, it was decided to address this issue.Objective: To show the problems of people suffering from glaucoma, and identify key aspects of the role of nurses in nursing care for this disease on the basis of preparation and care of patient after trabeculectomy in a branch of ophthalmology.Material and methods: To achieve the objectives of this study, analysis was made of the literature and the methods in individual cases. The following techniques were used: observation, interview, measurement, and analysis of documentation. A glaucoma clinic, treatment methods with particular reference to trabeculectomy are described. The care problems and principles of the care of ophthalmologically sick patients are shown. Results: As a result of the tests, the main objective of this study were achieved, i.e. to show the overall nursing care of ophthalmologically sick patients, and examples of the problems of glaucoma patients before and after trabeculectomy.Conclusions: Ophthalmologic patient care should be exercised in a comprehensive manner. Its aim is to nurture the highest possible level aimed at helping the patient to achieve full fitness and coping in everyday life.Key words: nursing care, glaucoma, trabeculectomy
