The role of nurses/midwives in health education for pre-menopausal women

Journal Title: Medycyna Ogólna i Nauki o Zdrowiu - Year 2012, Vol 18, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction: The professional functions of modern nurses/midwives include health promotion for pre-menopausal women. As professionals, they advise on health and nursing problems in various health situations. The aim of this study was to analyse the role of nurses/midwives in health education for pre-menopausal women.Material and methods: This survey-based study was performed using a self-designed original questionnaire. It was conducted in 2009/2010 and involved 200 nurses and midwives employed in the West Pomeranian Province. Results: Only 39% of respondents knew and were absolutely sure that health education lay within their professional competence, while 45% had some doubts about it, but decided to regard it as one of their duties. Respondents mentioned conversations with patients as one of the main sources of information on patients’ general health and health needs. When talking to patients, respondents usually concentrated on health issues (57%). They also assessed the effectiveness of their ‘advisory activity’, where 43% were unable to evaluate it, and 1% regarded it as inefficient. Conclusions: Nurses/midwives are aware that health education is an important element of their professional competence. The vast majority of nurses and midwives are not prepared to undertake actions associated with health education and promotion. When preparing health education-related topics, nurses and midwives concentrate on risk factors and health issues rather than diseases.Key words: menopause, health education, nurse, midwife
