THE ROLE OF ONLINE EDUCATION IN TEACHING HUMANITIES SUBJECTS TO STUDENTS AT TECHNICAL HIGHER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTIONS

Abstract

The rapid growth of technology, digitalisation and new media formats has created a challenge for the Ukrainian Higher education system: opening new frontiers for knowledge transfer but highlighting the drawbacks and limitations of online learning. In order to meet the needs of today’s millennial generation one has to explore new models of teaching focused on a personal-oriented approach and socio-experiential learning. In this context, the aims of humanitarian edu- cation for technical specialist are shifting from the building of students’ academic knowledge to development of their soft skills i.e. critical thinking, communication and project group work to prepare them for work and lifelong learning in a dynamic and changing world. A thoughtful introduction of online learning elements into the traditional university class- room can help to not only improve the students’ experience during their self-study, but also can help to develop their wider skills and capacities, such as digital literacy, data analysis, and master new tools for distant group co-operation. This article briefly reviews current on-line education formats applied by Ukrainian higher institutions and presents an exam- ple of the ICT upgrade of the course in History and Culture of Ukraine for students of technical specialities at National aviation university, Kyiv. Specifically, the author explores the use of multimedia content (documentaries, interviews, film fragments), visual materials (political cartoons, infographics) and social networks for fostering more productive dis- cussions with a class. It also considers the reasons why these tools should be used, how they can be best combined with traditional teaching and learning tools, as well as describing the potential benefits of technical upgrades for educators and. It presents a number of technical platforms available for distant group project work and some ideas for multimedia student projects in history and culture of Ukraine. The article demonstrates how easily a mobile, technical or online ele- ments can be added to humanitarian courses.
