The role of peripheral inflammation in cognitive impairments of bipolar disorder
Journal Title: Chinese Journal of Nervous and Mental Diseases - Year 2024, Vol 50, Issue 2
Abstract
As one of the core symptoms of bipolar disorder, cognitive impairment is difficult to treat, and the mechanism of it remains unclear. Recent studies have indicated the association between peripheral inflammation and cognitive impairments in bipolar disorder. That is, consistent high level of peripheral inflammation may lead to cognitive impairment in patients with bipolar disorder through neurotransmitter alterations, hyperactivation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and abnormality of microbial-gut-brain axis. Clarifying the association could provide new ideas for clinical diagnosis and treatment of cognitive impairments in bipolar disorder.
