The Role of Social Work in Fighting Substance Addiction Under Scope of Sustainable Development Goals

Abstract
Substance addiction is defined as continuing to take the substance despite causing bio-psycho-social and economic problems, being unable to respond to the desire to quit, and not restraining to use it. It is a severe public health problem due to its negative effects on the individual, family, group, and community levels. The global call to action in the fight against substance abuse is produced by the United Nations within the framework of the '2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development'. Some targets include the health and well-being dimension. The third goal is about the treatment and prevention of substance abuse. It purposes fight against addiction and strengthens the well-being of the individual, family, and society. Social work continues micro, mezzo, and macro-level studies with this goal. This study aims to reveal the roles and functions of social workers in the fight against substance abuse within the scope of Sustainable Development Goals. Social workers are involved in pharmacological and psychosocial treatments, rehabilitation, and post-treatment care. Practices do to increase the ability to cope with the problems, develop problem-solving capacities, raise awareness, and provide access to resources. Social worker's roles are case manager, counselor, networking resources, mobilizer, mediator, trainer, catalyst, relationship builder, advocator, and empowering.
