The role of the press in the cultural identity representation of the Uyghur people: the case of “Ittipak” Newspaper in Kyrgyzstan

Abstract
Mass media contribute to the formation of public awareness by bringing the cultural, social, economic, and political problems of a society to the agenda. The function of newspapers in preserving and handing cultural values and national identity down next generations is also one of the important issues researched in the relevant literature. The historical struggle for identity of Uyghur public also finds an important place in the Uyghur press. In this study, the news of the newspaper “Ittipak”, which has been published by the Uyghur People’s Association “Ittipak” in Kyrgyzstan since 1994, is analyzed and the role of the newspaper in representing the Uyghur identity is evaluated by content analysis method. As a result of the research, it is seen that the newspaper aims to introduce the culture, history, intellectuals, and artists of the Uyghur people, as well as expressing the cultural problems of the Uyghur people in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region and in the world and aims to raise cultural awareness of the Uyghur people.
