The scale and geographical breakdown of Polish foreign direct in-vestment

Abstract
Globalization, integration and the liberalization of the economy makes a significant change in the business environment. National markets are losing their importance, while international markets become more and more open and reachable even for internationally inexperienced companies. In recent years also polish enterprises become more active in the field of international capital ex-pansion. The aim of this article is to examine the scale of the involvement of Polish enterprises in foreign direct investment (FDI). The study includes the value of Polish FDI, its structure and geographical breakdown. It is based on data gained form National Bank of Poland for years 2003-2011. The article is divided into two main parts. The first discuss some important issues concerning foreign expansion of enterprises, i.e. motives as well as em-pirical and theoretical background in the light of recent global economic changes. Second part presents the data concerning FDI of Polish companies. Not only the value and main locations of the capital flows was presented but also the structure of the flow: investments in equity, reinvested profits and other flows (as intercompany loans).
