The Scientific and Educational Department in Chyrów (1886–1939) in the Reports

Abstract

The Scientific and Educational Department of the Jesuit Fathers in Chyrów, which was opened in 1886, was an institution of unquestioned importance to the education of elites at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The article presents the Reports as an important source for analysing the history of the Department, the activity of which ended with the outbreak of World War II, as well as for examining the history of education in Galicia during its autonomy and in the Second Polish Republic. The first Report was published in 1894 and it included data related to the school year 1983/1894. We have access to 45 annual reports in the form of printed notebooks ranging from 34 to 253 pages in length. They include information concerning the members of the teaching staff, the agenda of subjects and handbooks obligatory in particular classes, the subjects of essays for each class, the issues to be learned for the written finals, scientific resources (library for the teachers, library for the students, equipment of studies), important regulations of the school’s authorities, the Department’s chronicle, as well as the students’ grades at the end of the school year.
