Journal Title: Актуальні питання гуманітарних наук: Міжвузівський збірник наукових праць молодих вчених Дрогобицького державного педагогічного університету - Year 2018, Vol 22, Issue 2
Abstract
The article describes contemporary ways of qualifying lexical units for monolingual dictionaries, bilingual diction- aries and multilingual dictionaries on the basis of selected and the most recent language corpora tools. The frequency and collocation of lexical units are discussed using language corpora, search engines and IT tools. Occasionalisms are described as units that do not meet formal lexicographical requirements. Occasionalisms constitutean exceptional group of new words formed in special contextual conditions. They are not as significant as neologisms because the time of their existence is most often strongly restricted by a specific communicative stuation and the time of the ending of the emergent phenomenon which has been a source of inspiration for the emergence of a neologism. Thanks to language corpora, search engines and IT toolsa given lexical unit is represented in a wider context, which enables the researchers to perform a linguistic analysis, assess the kind of text, its quality and, what is extremely import- ant on account of reasearch on neologisms, the number a given lexem is used to be able to state if it really exists in the system of a given language and is a fully accepted lexical unit or if it is language pfenomenon with a very restricted time of existence, as occasionalisms. Language corpora with search engines and IT tools are only one of many other sources of excerpts of the newest lexis but a very interesting one. That is why it is worth presenting as an essential but not the only contemporary reasearch tool, for example WordNet (currently contains 191 000 nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs, 285 000 word senses, and over 600 000 relations) is a relational lexico-semantic dictionary which reflects the lexical system of the Polish language. “Senses in plWordNet are interconnected by relations. In the resulting network, each word is defined implicitly in refer- ence to other words. Among polish WordNet’s numerous applications there is its use as a Polish-English and English- Polish dictionary – the effect of mapping onto Princeton WordNet (the first and for many years the largest wordnet in the world)”. Vast majority of the occasionalisms described in the article do not meet formal lexicographical requirements, but they provide a lot of important information about contemporary reality, not only linguistic reality.
