The social plot of agricultural history

Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2010, Vol 3, Issue 3

Abstract

The author refers to the historiographical approach to the agricultural subject, mainly focusing on Andalusia in the 19th century. The work begins by making an analysis of the use of the concept of “peasant” and then provides the approach to this secondary agricultural subject in the historiographical work. It undertakes a few reflections on the tendency to the existing manipulation when studying this subject, and it considers that there is a trend that has forged studies from an agrarian society to the explanatory models in force: as the liberal analysis that strips the agricultural subject of all awareness and limits the riots to spontaneous actions, or on the other hand, the interpretative topics that idealize and distort the agricultural subject altering his/her knowledge and giving him/her a destination from an external point of view. Critizasing these trends, the author concludes that it is necessary to know in depth the complex web of the agrarian class, considering its specifc experience, knowing what its members thought and what they proposed, removing the simplistic interpretations, both devaluating as idealists.
