The sociodemographic situation, health and physical functions of very elderly cohort in Vilnius (Lithuania)

Abstract
Background. Our opinion was that with the growing elderly and longlived population in Western countries, providers of health and social care services need more information on the health status and needs of this age group.Objectives. The aim of this study was to screen the sociodemographic situation, health data, physical functions and need of help among longlived people in Lithuanian urban population (Vilnius cohort).Methods. This study was carried out in the Lithuanian very elderly population (aged 90+) who lived in the city of Vilnius on 31 December 1997, by identifying the sociodemographic variables, health data, comorbid diseases, Basic Activities of Daily Living (ADLs), Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADLs), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15), cognitive assessment by the Standardised Mini Mental State Examination score (MMSE).
