The Statistical Investigation of Teaching and Examining Lexical Cohesion on the Ground of Iran EFL Educational Context from Theory to Practice
Journal Title: International Research Journal of Applied and Basic Sciences - Year 2013, Vol 7, Issue 12
Abstract
Linguistically, lexical cohesion uses the continuity of lexical meaning in order to explain how the meaning of a text is appointed (Halliday and Hasan, 1976). Lexical cohesion can be captured better if someone looks at its interaction with other discourse-organizing properties with the aim to learn more about the systematic structuring of discourse. Lexical cohesion is the result of chains of related words that lead to the continuity of lexical meaning. Therefore this study aims at investigating the relationship between teaching lexical cohesion explicitly through simple prose to Iranian intermediate EFL learners and their writing improvement in terms of correct use of lexical cohesive ties. 40 Iranian intermediate EFL learners were selected to participate in this study. A standardized test, PET was conducted in order to ensure that the participants were homogeneous regarding their EFL proficiency. A pretest was also administered on the writing ability of participants prior to the treatment. Twenty-two sessions of instruction each lasting for about 120 minutes comprised the whole treatment to the learners. After the treatment, a post-test was conducted to determine learning improvement compared to pre-test. The results of the study revealed that there is a positive relationship between input enhancement and awareness of lexical ties among Iranian intermediate EFL learners.
