Abstract

The author analyzes the educational program ''Philosophy for Children'' (P4C) by American education theorist, philosopher Matthew Lipman and unique system of training and education in Pavlysh high school Ukrainian teacher Vasyl Sukhomlynsky. We found out that the development of the intellect and morality of the child both teachers recognized as the main goal of the teacher; that philosophical-cultural artistic content thumbnail Vasyl Sukhomlynsky style of his tales and stories goes back to texts written by Matthew Lipman. Also, we analysed stories by Vasyl Sukhomlynsky ''I want to say my own word'' and ''Which is better?'' guide to the program ''Philosophy for Children'' ''Thinking Cats and Laughing Trees, Critical Thinking, Philosophy for Children, Short Stories''. Author proved that M. Lipman adapted the story of V. Sukhomlynsky. Besides M. Lipman changed the names and other details according to the culture of their country, but left the basic philosophical and pedagogical content for the ultimate goal, which both teachers saw the maximum capacity of the child, and intellectual development Morality in the child, its adequate inclusion into a complex, multi-vectored, contradictory world. Vasyl Sukhomlynsky and Matthew Lipman used problem-activity method of using philosophy: in fairy tales, stories, parables, children who read, there are many events that are typical problematic situations for children, regardless of country. We noted that the translation of the stories of V. Sukhomlynsky is made especially correctly and with caution; value-emotional shades are transferred practically completely, and the sensitivity of the Ukrainian philosophical mentality is preserved.
