Abstract

Ayurveda is an ancient medical science. It has thoroughly described swasthavritta as well as samprapti and treatment of various diseases. In today’s world, improper sitting postures, increased requirement of traveling, excessive physical work and altered habits of food consumption may lead to vitiation of vayu which produces different vata-vyadhies. Vata-vyadhi is one of the most common and uprising health problem in our daily routine and Gridhrasi is one of them. In Gridhrasi pain starts from sphika pradesha and radiates downwards to kati, prushtha, uru, janu, jangha and the patient is unable to walk. Gridhrasi name itself suggests the gait of patient is like Gridhra (vulture). Sciatica in contemporary medical science can be correlated with Gridhrasi by its similarity in course of pain. The present study was aimed to assess clinically the effect of Panchmuli kashya with Erand tail, mentined in Chakradatta. 30 patients were treated for 7 days. Results obtained were analyzed for statistical significance which shows Panchmuli kashay with Erand tail is effective in treating the cardinal symptom i.e. Ruk (pain) in patients of Gridhrasi.
