Special attention is drawn to the advantages and disadvantages of tests, the methodology of their procedure and the development of test tasks for the control of the grammatical competence of the 5th grade students. Knowledge testing, aimed at determining the level of success of students’ education, analysis of the results and correction of the subsequent learning process is one of the most important components of pedagogy and the teaching system as a whole. An incorrect organization of knowledge evaluation can be one of the reasons for the decline in the quality of education. In order to avoid the aforementioned and to reform the content of education, first of all, it is necessary to improve the system of evaluation and modernize the diagnostics of student learning. Knowledge testing helps not only to identify the quality of learning but also to manage the learning process optimally. Tests are widely used in schools, higher education institutions and during the state independent evaluation of graduates of higher education institutions. To determine the dynamics of the development of grammatical skills of the 5th grade students who were taught with an experimental technique, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of knowledge testing results was carried out with the help of comparative analysis. The level of grammatical competence of students in the group, where new testing tasks where implemented, increased by 20%. The number of students with a high level of grammatical competence increased by 25%, with the sufficient one – by 16.7%. Thus, the results of an experimental study confirm the effectiveness of the developed methodology and the appropriateness of its use during English lessons in secondary schools.
