THE TRIBOLOGICAL PROPERTIES OF DIAMOND-LIKE CARBON COATINGS UNDER IONIC LIQUIDS LUBRICATION

Abstract
This paper presents the results of TiN / a-C: H: W diamond like carbon coatings deposited using the physical vapour deposition PVD process on SW7M steel. The topography and cross-section analysis of the coatings were examined using a scanning electron microscope – SEM. Analysis of chemical composition was performed by using glow discharge spectroscopy GDOES and energy dispersive spectroscopy EDS. The tribological properties were tested using T-01M tester. In friction pairs operating under dry friction conditions, the elements coated with diamond-like carbon had better tribological properties than elements without coatings. Similar results were obtained for boundary lubrication conditions with 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIBF4) and trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ionic liquids as the lubricants. The results obtained during the tests carried out indicated that the application of diamond coatings considerably improves tribological properties. Additionally the use of ionic liquids resulted in an increase in the friction properties of the systems.
