THE UNIQUE BRONZE POMMEL OF THE MACE FROM OUTSKIRTS OF ANNALISTIC ZVENYHOROD

Abstract

The unique bronze pommel of the mace that was accidentally discovered near annalistic Zvenyhorod in L’viv region is described and analyzed. It belongs to previously unknown type of cast bronze maces with round studs and ornament in the form of pseudozern and slightly larger oval elongated protrusions. The exact analogies for such maces among materials from Middle Ages are not known. Very similar, but not identical, mace was found in medieval Halych, near the Church of the Annunciation, where the cultural layer and sacred objects can be dated back to ХІІ–ХІІІ centuries. The fact that this mace was found near annalistic Zvenyhorod which has cultural layers, objects and materials generally from XI–XIII and less from XIII-XIV centuries could have some importance for the establishing of the chronology of this find. Except XI century, when the maces with spikes were not common, the pommel from the outskirts of Zvenyhorod can be possibly dated to the timeframe from XII to XIV centuries. This find also shows that some maces were both armaments and at the same time perfect highly artistic artifacts. It is possible that they belonged to members of the elite. Such maces could be ceremonial and used as symbols of power.
