The use of cone-beam computed tomography in everyday orthodontic practice

Journal Title: Forum Ortodontyczne - Year 2013, Vol 9, Issue 4

Abstract

Introduction. The introduction of spiral tomography into radiological diagnostics has allowed practitioners to expand basic orthodontic diagnostics in cases where conventional radiological images are not sufficient to make an unequivocal diagnosis and to establish a treatment plan. The CBCT examination enables physicians to obtain a complete image of the facial region of the skull and the digital effect of the examination enables them to obtain cross-sections of the examined structures in all three planes. Aim. The aim of this research paper was to present cases encountered in everyday orthodontic practice, in which the authors decided to extend the normal diagnostic methods by using CBCT. Material and methods. The material comprised medical records of 20 patients who presented themselves for orthodontic treatment at the Clinic of Orthodontic of the Provincial Outpatient Dental Clinic in Cracow between January 2010 and December 2012. Results. Most of the cases where additional diagnostics with CBCT was indicated were cases with dental anomalies, predominantly impacted teeth: upper and lower canines, maxillary central incisors, maxillary second premolars and second molars. The CBCT examination was also performed on a patient after an RME (rapid maxillary expansion) procedure and on patients for whom the use of skeletal anchorage during their orthodontic treatment was planned. Conclusions. Today, cone beam computed tomography is commonly used in orthodontic treatment. It is particularly helpful when the conventional two-dimensional radiology does not provide sufficient information that can have influence on the direction and the mode of the undertaken treatment.
