The use of metals and their alloys in dental prosthetics
Journal Title: Prosthodontics - Year 2016, Vol 66, Issue 6
Abstract
The metals used in dental prosthetics can be divided into noble and base. The main advantage of noble metals over base metals is their biocompatibility and resistance to corrosion. We can include gold, platinum, palladium iridium and ruthenium to the noble metals. Among base metals used in dentistry we can mention nickel, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, iron, titanium, vanadium, aluminum, niobium, tantalum, tungsten. Mainly alloys – mixture of metals are used instead of pure metals because they have better mechanical properties. There are many divisions of alloys in order to their composition, use, microstructure, melting point and the ability to dissolve the individual components in the alloy. The most commonly used is the division of alloys according to ADA – dividing them into high noble, noble and base due to the percentage composition of gold. In dental prosthesis gold alloys, silverpalladium alloys, chromium and cobalt alloys and stainless steel are used.
