Abstract

Throughout history, the inhabit territory has condensed a wide range of signifcations— political, technical, economical and socio-cultural—, that encourage the construction of a sense and feeling of belonging which generate customs of usage and appropriation of a physical and symbolic type and shape de materialization of the political desire and the escape from modernity yearnings. On coastal cities, the seaside strolls or waterfront promenades have become material and cultural landmarks that endowed with life the public space which end up being the urban referent by excellence. In Campeche’s case, to establish a relationship between discourse and public politics which branded the waterfront promenade building, the instances of informal sociability generated on it, the peculiar ways of urban organization that raised the construction of this space and the representations developed around it, outline the main referents to start to know the intricate interaction between city and society; material culture and cultural history and politics. Campeche’s waterfront promenade turns into a route to ask ourselves and reflect about de political and cultural courses which drive this place to become a source of key signifcations in the construction of the political imaginary.
