Established and Forgotten in Culture Study
Journal Title: Revista de Estudios Marítimos y Sociales - Year 2011, Vol 4, Issue 4
Abstract
Since the contributions made by Clifford Geertz in the 1970s, the study of culture has been thought fundamentally as an hermeneutic endeavor, aimed at interpreting the meanings that underlie in different types of social relationships and social practice. These perspectives progressively derived towards the idea that participant observation and especially reflexivity were the more adequate forms to study culture. Also, the way in which specifc cultures are ‘inscribed’ in a specifc text became central to the epistemological preoccupations that resulted from the former starting points. By discerning alternatives and dimensions in the study of culture that were not originally considered in these research programs, this article aims at looking for forms that constitute an alternative way of understanding and studying culture.
