The Working-Class Concept

Abstract
El problema que plantea Marcel van der Linden en su búsqueda de “a new concept of the working class” que supere lo que él considera el “narrow nineteenthcentury concept of the proletariat we fnd in Marx” es el del pasaje de las formas con que se presenta la clase obrera en las situaciones concretas a la delimitación del concepto de clase obrera, o sea el pasaje del concreto representado a la abstracción, para poder recorrer el camino hacia el concreto determinado.1 Afortunadamente, la propuesta evita las rápidas, pero falsas, soluciones (tan corrientes hoy en Argentina) de decir que frente a la complejidad de las situaciones concretas a) es imposible hacer cualquier intento de conceptualización o b) inventar tantas clases sociales como situaciones hay, renunciando a la universalidad propia de la ciencia. Aunque planteado en otros términos el problema se vincula directamente con una temática hoy rejuvenecida pero que tuvo auge en América Latina en los ’60, a propósito de la denominada “marginalidad social”2, y que fue declinando hacia los planteos menos teóricos y más técnicos del “trabajo informal” y “trabajo precario”. Lo mismo que entonces, el punto de partida teórico lo constituyen los trabajos de Karl Marx, dado que, en palabras de van der Linden, que comparto, “su análisis es el mejor que tenemos”. Sin embargo, parece necesario hacer algunas precisiones acerca de ese “concepto estrecho de proletariado” que se atribuye a Marx. Porque limitar la defnición de clase obrera a este concepto estrecho signifca acompañar a Marx sólo un trecho en el recorrido que él hace desde las abstracciones generales hacia lo concreto determinado.
