THEORETICAL BASIS OF VIRTUAL REALITY THERAPY FOR SOME ANXIETY DISORDERS

Abstract

There are two approaches to behavioural therapy for anxiety disorders and phobias: systematic desensitization and exposure. Virtual reality (VR) technology becomes more and more popular in therapeutic practice based on the exposure paradigm (VRET). This article analyzes mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of this approach, which is usually skipped in empirical publications. The problem of presence in virtual environment and how it effects the therapy is discussed in detail. Special attention is given to interactivity of virtual reality, organism's activity and brain neuroplasticity. Conclusions include some suggestions regarding future works in the area of virtual reality based therapeutic tools.
